Team Emily 2020!
Welcome to Team Emily! This will be our 7th year participating in Sharon’s Ride Run Walk for the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County and we are thrilled you will be supporting our efforts this year! Every donation goes towards helping the 50,000 people in San Diego with epilepsy by providing essential programs and services. Thank you for your generosity!
I can’t express to you enough how crucial the support of the Epilepsy Foundation is to our family as we continue to manage Emily’s epilepsy. It’s been ten years since her first seizure (and only 5 months since her most recent) when we ended up in the ER wondering how on earth we got there. She had no known cause for the seizure: no family history or head injury or illness. After a short time, Emily was having up to 25 seizures a day. We tried multiple medications, two at a time with side effects that left her tired, depressed and angry…and the seizures continued. She even went on the medical version of the Ketogenic Diet for a year and a half…requiring all her food to be measured to a tenth of a gram!
Throughout it all, the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego was there for us. We attended support groups, participated in Expressive Arts Therapy and the staff helped us work with her school to craft accommodations so that Emily could manage her academics. Emily felt empowered attending the support groups knowing that she was not alone. She even became a spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation, bravely sharing her personal story throughout San Diego in order to raise awareness and help others.
This past August, Emily had a seizure after two and a half years of being seizure free, and right before she was about to start her Driver’s Ed course. At age 16, not being able to drive is a major bummer! Despite this disappointing setback, just days after having the seizure, Emily appeared on the local FOX News morning program to share her story and help promote Epilepsy Awareness Day with the San Diego Padres. As a mother, I continue to marvel at Emily’s courage, resilience and passion to help others, while continuing to battle her own challenges every day. We couldn’t do it without your help! Thank you so much for your continued support of Team Emily!
With much gratitude,
The Eshoo Family
